Beer Can Racing

Please note that the Beer Can Races course has been shortened effective Wednesday September 12, 2007. Start--Leave C to port--Finish The start time of the Beer Can Race will be 17:30 after October 1, 2007

Welcome to the Wednesday Night beer can races. These races sponsored by the Windjammers Yacht Club have taken place on Lake Tahoe since the early 1970s. The beer can races are not an alcoholic drink fest but a term given a a more informal relaxed type of sailboat racing.

There is usually no comittee boat except in July and August when they are timed. Each boat and crew battle each other on the honor system making it one of the best ways for a sailor interested in racing to come and learn. If you own a sailboat and are interested in a little midweek excitement come out and join us Wednesdays at 5:59 pm.

  • 5:59pm - wakeup call - 3 short beeps
  • 6:00pm - warning - 1 long horn
  • 6:05pm - Slow boats start (200 or greater PHRF) - 1 long horn
  • 6:10pm - Fast boats start (199 or less PHRF) - 1 long horn

If a boat is new and doesn't know how it rates, it should start with the slow boats.

In July and August there usually is a committee boat who will run the start sequence and take times. For May, June, Sept and Oct,If there are only a few boats (usually in May and Oct) we will do one start. That information is communicated while out there. The course is as the attatchment shows; except if we have a NE or E wind, we may reverse it. The WYC recommends highly the wearing of a type V Personal Floatation Device during all sailing activities.

Oh, yes, a beer is not a bad thing after a hard night of racing. Join us afterwards at Steamers.
